FINALLY: Leatherface Prequel Gets October Release!
After much speculation about the Leatherface prequel, it appears Lionsgate and Saban Films will release the film in September and October 2017. At first this seems encouraging because typically releasing a horror film in October is a sign that the distributor has confidence in the film. When looking at the details, the whole Leatherface prequel seems strange.
Leatherface will be released on September 21, 2017 on DirecTV. On October 20, 2017, the film will receive a limited theatrical run and a VOD release. Keep in mind these are the same companies that botched the limited theatrical run of Rob Zombie’s 31. So Leatherface fans are likely to only see Leatherface on the big screen at limited one night only events in less than 550 theaters nationwide.
The whole release news seems like it is highly likely that the filmmakers botched the production of the movie.
Leatherface is directed by Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury with the screenplay by Seth M. Sherwood. The film stars Lili Taylor, Stephen Dorff, and Nicole Andrews. The movie was filmed in Bulgaria. This marks the first time a film in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise was shot outside of the United States. Leatherface was produced by Campbell Grobman Films with Lionsgate as the distributor.
There has been no trailer or teaser released for the film. And the director and writer associated with the film are somewhat inexperienced. And how do you not film a Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise movie in Texas? That’s just plain wrong. I bet we don’t even see Leatherface in his mask until the end of the movie.
Based on the below stills that were released for the film, I can see why the film is being dumped on DirecTV and VOD. It’s sad but this is quickly becoming a study as to how a production company can quickly mess up a franchise that horror fans love so much.
I really hope I am wrong about all this. The good news is this September DirecTV subscribers will get to see while the rest of us wait until October 20, 2017 for VOD.
Is that the camera man to the right?
